Their large heads and necks allow Tasmanian devils to generate the strongest bite by body weight of any living mammal, yet devils eat more carrion than they do live prey. They are able to digest bone and fur. Not all devils have a white chest stripe.

They only live about five years and with one exception can only be found in Australian zoos, although in the wild they occupy all of the habitats of Tasmania. Devil facial tumour disease is the worst threat to the species and individuals frequently get run over while retrieving roadkill.
